Low level artificial bid is doubled
(Page of 4)

If you play a system that includes many artificial bids at a low level, there are often situations coming up where the opponents get in your way via a double.

Even if you play a fairly natural system, Stayman, Transfers, Two-way Checkback, Drury etc. provide doubling potential.

My suggestion is to play the following:

Pass: No control/stopper in opponent's suit or a strong desire to play the contract redoubled.

RDBL: Weak desire to play the contract redoubled

Bid: Usual meaning, control/stopper in opponent's suit and no penalty desire.

In situations where little information was exchanged, bidding might not promise a control/stopper, but simply shows the hand type. Pass is then the "I don't have anything to say bid" and rest remains same.

The main advantage to standard methods is that it's easier to get the opponents when you have them due to the two ranges of penalizing interest.

The opponent may run to 2 and avoid the disaster.

The main point is that you had a controlled way to get to 2xx, which is not so easy using standard methods. On another day the opponent doesn't have a good runout available and then you score big.

It's far from clear that south should pass here, but considering that the doubler passed initially in 3rd seat non-vul (making a flat hand more likely) and that our side has about 30HCP and perhaps no biddable slam, the pass can be found.

And hey, 840 in a 3-2 fit would make a great story ;)

To see the merit of the approach, exchange South's and East's hand.

You may argue that West shouldn't have doubled. Perhaps yes, but as long as such actions happen at my table I would like to get them when I can.

When this hand occurred South redoubled for business and North wasn't sure how serious this was and ran.

With the separation in two ranges, North can be fairly optimistic that 2 will make and redouble for partner to pass.
