Lyon Round-Robin, Day 7
(Page of 3)

The final day of the Bermuda Bowl round-robin began with four teams having decent hopes of breaking into the top eight: MONACOAUSTRALIAITALY, and BRAZIL. If one of those teams would succeed in its mission, it would likely be at EGYPT's expense.

AUSTRALIA's hopes were quickly dashed, with bad losses in matches 19 and 20. MONACO started with a small win against BRAZIL and a slightly larger loss. BRAZIL lost again in the second match of the day. ITALY won small, then lost soundly.

A surprising contender was NEW ZEALAND, which began the day nearly 20 VPs shy of 8th place. Two big wins vaulted it into 9th, less than 6 VPs out of 8th.

In the final match, MONACO fell to THE NETHERLANDS, 34-20. NEW ZEALAND put on a good performance, winning 46-10 against BRAZILEGYPT lost to BULGARIA, falling to 9th, making the qualifiers:

1. FRANCE

2. THE NETHERLANDS

3. USA1

4. SWEDEN

5. BULGARIA

6. USA2

7. CHINA

8. NEW ZEALAND

For the KO phase, FRANCE picked CHINA, and the winner of that match will play the winner of NETHERLANDS - NEW ZEALAND.  USA 1 picked BULGARIA, and the winner of that match will play the winner of USA 2 - SWEDEN in the semis.  Unlike recent World Championships, there will be no carryover in the knockout phase.

With one match to play in the Venice Cup, the top six teams had locked up qualification, while 7th-place THE NETHERLANDS would need to lose a near-blitz while USA1 won one in order to fail to make the cut.

POLAND ensured its qualification in the final match with a 44-22 defeat of ENGLAND. That made the qualifying teams:

1. SWEDEN

2. CHINA

3. RUSSIA

4. INDONESIA

5. ISRAEL

6. ENGLAND

7. THE NETHERLANDS

8. POLAND

For the KO phase, SWEDEN picked ISRAEL and the right to play the winner of RUSSIA - ENGLAND.  CHINA picked THE NETHERLANDS and the winner of that match will play the winner of INDONESIA - POLAND

The last day of the round-robin in the d'Orsi Trophy essentially saw four teams vying four two slots: ISRAELJAPANAUSTRIA, and TURKEY.

ISRAEL nipped AUSTRIA by 3 IMPs in match 19, while TURKEY won by 4 and JAPAN by 17. Meanwhile, CHINA and CHINA HONG KONG won near blitzes, and INDIA won a true blitz, and suddenly there were six contenders.

In match 20: JAPAN and INDIA won big, standing 7th and 8th, respectively. In two critical matches, CHINA beat TURKEY by 9 IMPs and CHINA HONG KONG defeated ISRAEL by 12. JAPAN's qualification looked likely, while the other five were eyeing 8th place.

CHINA and TURKEY won, but not by enough. CHINA HONG KONG crushed AUSTRIA, but INDIA did likewise against ISRAEL, holding onto its qualifying position. The top eight teams:
