Heading into the 3rd set, I sat out and enjoyed the luxury of watching vugraph. This third set alone contained a total of 82 IMPs, and was an exciting set to watch.

The first hand provided an opportunity for XIAO:

1st Seat, None Vul. What do you open?

Both Norths elected to open 2.

At the other table, 2 was simply raised to 4, while Brent did well to force to slam. There is really no reason not to Ogust and see what partner responds with. If he had replied with 3 you can still sign off in game.

+11 IMPs to XIAO.

On the next board, 6 was bid and made by both tables, resulting in a push.

The next swing came on Board 5 (deals rotated) :

After an interesting Smolen auction, partner tables the 7.  Upon winning the A, what do you return?

Given that partner led the 7 and that you hold the 98 as well, it seems unlikely that partner can also hold the K, and thus a diamond return seems like fair game.

+11 IMPs to XIAO when the other table stopped in 4.

The 7 (3rd and low) is tabled and your K loses to the ace. Declarer draws three trumps and you win the second round of spades with the Q. What next?

On this hand, the diamond return was lethal.

Another +11 IMPs to XIAO when only 4 was reached at the other table. At this point, it was 35-0 in favor of XIAO after 6 boards.

However, STEPHANI scored an unanswered 31 IMPs in the following boards to close the gap.

Do you bid again?

Given the length of spades without the Ace, it seems unlikely that 5 will be set, especially given that we hold a doubleton heart (as opposed to a stiff) and the Qx which may or may not generate defensive tricks.

5-X -1 for -200 opposite 5= +600 gave 9 IMPs to STEPHANI.

Would most people overcall 2 or even X?

The overcall prevented EW from reaching their 3NT, and maybe a case can be made for West to bid 2NT instead of X. Without the overcall, the auction went:

What's your call?

Obviously, lefty has a large amount of values, given that your partner preempted first seat favorable, righty passed, and your hand has nothing.

Sarah elected to bid 3, and lefty bid 3NT which ended up as the final contract.

The other table was much more interesting:

East made a 2 psych that may have well kept the opponents out of a spade slam, but this was not to be. 4-X would have been an interesting hand to defend, and with perfect defense +2000 can be collected. However, once Brent bid 4NT, Kevin made a great bid of 6, realizing that this hand is fishy and that East is trying to steal the contract.

+1370 opposite -720 gave 12 IMPs to XIAO.

The set ended with a few overtrick IMPs and the final score was 49-33 in favor of XIAO. Going into the last set, XIAO led by 26.
