After looking at the hand, I see 3 can win the battle.
If it's played well.
The opps can start the tap with club-club.
Run you out of trump, but can't get to a 2nd club trick before you get to a 2nd spade trick. Due to 3/3 spades and the opps transportation problem.

So the people that make a convenient 3 over 3, and get luck with good play will be okay. A very interesting def vs play hand.

This might not be the best hand to classify anybody as either one.

So much of the value of my hand is towards playing in hearts, reducing the value of playing anywhere else, even NT.

All those tedious hands defending NT.
At the club you might not have even paid attention to partner's diamond spot. Let alone do the rule of eleven.
And 99%+ of the time it probably doesn't matter.
Then this hand comes up.
Partner has to be awake and you have to convince him that it is right to go for 4 diamond tricks, not 3.

I recommend the rule of 11 on both the 5 and 3.

Why should partner have anything but some bad hearts that aren't going to help us, not much in spades, possibly his only values are in clubs. Lho's could be shortness in diamonds may increase rho's length. Could we even have 2 dia losers and the rest of our small cards?

How good are our opps? Do you want to test them and see if they can't find a double?

I think unfortunately the ruling has to stand.
Not necessarily that it is right or I agree.
Both sides could be guilty.
South should not get away with not alerting 2.
Even though at the scene, West may be guilty of irresponsible assumptions.

Double fit.
Terrible urge to not pass both times.
Don't see that bidding 3 would have resolved guesswork.

Wishful thinking.

I wish that I wasn't here.

I think I am better placed somewhere else.

I think I am already badly placed in 1.

2 is an improvement?

I going to bid twice?

Bobby Wollf gave lectures at the beginning of our club games for this recurring problem.

His suggestion was 2.

Yea. Then you can ask what happened when you get back with your coffee.

I hope we're on the same page.
Partner's direct 2 didn't ask for my opinion or give us a chance at something other or lower.
My pass doesn't mean I like 2.
It's up to partner to now initiate giving me a chance at my opinion.

OPENING LEADS BY MONTY HALL

Door #1: A spade lead. Is there a chance we can stop declarer from getting 2 ruffs and 4 trump tricks?

Door #2: A club lead. Not much chance of getting a club ruff, but we may have 2 club tricks.

Door #3: A diamond lead. We may have 2 diamond tricks.

I picked door 2.

Monty Hall opens door 1. I see that it is 10 tricks - deal a make.

I switch from door 2 to door 3. Now I am 66% right. Better than 50/50 or 33%.

Taking a call here looks like I'm hoping something saves me.

I play the cheapest possible bid = 3+, 0+ hcp.
If I did this last time, partner will know this can be my hand now.

I wouldn't take from this don't think strategy.
1 has a chance of picking off their suit.
1 for lead.
1. I've had better luck with 5 card suits.
1. Kind of light hearted. Partner's 5 immediately cost a trick.

Sometimes you risk losing your zero instead of 9%.

Strains of Monty Hall, Marilyn Vos Savant, Harvard math professors?

Did this make him wrong 2/3 of the time? Not 50/50.
Not him, but maybe Marshall can break the 33 1/3 dead heat.

I had a partner who would agonize over 3 choices.
Eliminate one and agonize over 2.
Was it me, or how often could he have saved himself the second agony?

You're making me like bidding 1 better than making a t/o double on this given hand.

On other possible hands I'll take pass over t/o double and maybe backing in.
Rather than taking the chance that if partner is involved he will guess this is what I had for a t/o of 1.
Or what do I do if the auction comes back to me in any red suit by anybody at any level.

I remember back to my early learning days.
Too frequently making passive leads.
Especially trump just to get off lead.

So many comments.
I don't think anybody has specifically mentioned some ways a trick can go away by leading a trump instead of something else.

Out of 12 pairs:

2 490's
4 460's
420 was still 5 out of 11.

By the way, I know people hate this, with 23 hcp, lho t/o doubled, rho t/o the t/o. So we didn't have to play it and go down 5.

Really?

Lho bid 1.
-dbl over my 1 overcall?

Partner doesn't raise spades?

Rho is bidding more clubs.

Pass.
