You got that.
Opening 1 is a hindrance to reaching par/fun.
Personal preference.

Personal/partnership preference.

This hand has multiple strikes against it.
A better heart suit.
The Q in a longer suit rather than a short suit.
Some more 10's or 9's or another jack or 2.
Partner can't use any of those to make 3N when you don't have them, even if he/she has 13 or 14 hcp.

When you open 1, how does partner know you do or don't have this hand or so many of those things that make this a better hand. Unless partner knows you never open a hand like this.

3N makes every/other time.

I'm playing partner's 2 and rho's 3 to not have helped in giving out info on side suits. So I'm bidding 4 rather than 4 to further obfuscate info for lho.

If I open 1 and partner bids 1N, I have to pass, right?
I haven't figured out why anybody has this on their card.

I don't want to defend 3 or 4 spades. I think lho is the one most in need of info. I'd rather have him/her guess.

The first thing that struck me upon seeing Jeff's post, was simplicity. I grabbed at an easy answer.

His wording in the title and poll choices says a lot to me.

A whole lot of info in the comment follow-ups.

I still would not “call for” or ever “call for” the director.
But have to accept that others do.

Whatever happened to:
Alert.
Please explain.

And the players playing the game.
Maybe if things are so complex, they don't belong.

I don't look at it as lying.
Yes, I thought about the heart situation.
And how I don't see solace with anything I do.

I think this hand is awkward hcp, controls, distribution, and auction. 4 and hope.

I have a mtchpt field and opps.
And maybe how's my game going.
And I've been looking over these for years.
Most recent ones that seem to work well have been exactly 4 spades 333 and 10-12 hcp.

This one's a little different.

There could have been different poll options.
No. I would not call the director.
Yes. I think if somebody wants to call the director, that is fine.

Hopefully, the director listens and everybody knows it is time for him/her to leave.

The numbers I saw about 3 yrs ago were 168,000 with 50% below 200 masterpoints. I guess could have been stale numbers.

Don't mess with platinum points.
Do something about performance ratings. It's such a huge void.
There are so many possibilities. Make them provisional at the beginning. You can still keep masterpoints.

Tuff love. You want performance points? Perform.

The rebids over 2 have ambiguities.
If 2 guarantees 3 hearts, it may be with/without a dia stopper.
If 2 can be a 4 card suit, it should deny a dia stopper.
Some like 2N to guarantee a dia stopper.
I like 3 to deny 3 hearts, 5 spades, and a dia stopper.

The 2 4sf has so much room/potential. It seems like a discretionary partnership should get it right.
How about responder bidding something and getting a clarification?

If your partnership wants to have 2 have potential of only 2 hearts, now responder has 1 more bid - 2.

Long ago it was singletons including A K Q for flying fur.
Aging players don't have as much fur.
You could get some scrawny tufts here, but I wouldn't call it illegal per se.

Whenever partner makes a 4sf bid (2 here) he/she should roll call my responses.
2 = 3 hearts or default.
2 = 5 spades or default.
2N = dia stopper or default.
3 = 5 clubs or default.

1 of my bids has to be able to say I don't have a good answer.

The awkwardness of 4sf when it comes up and hasn't been discussed.
Shouldn't it have been discussed that one of our next bids over 2 means I heard your force but I'm just not saying anything right now.
If that was 2, now partner has the max space available to make forcing calls: 2, 2N, 3, 3. 3, 3, 4, 4.

I'd rather have a diamond honor. The one I've got does a lot of cursing. I hope partner just bids 3N and I get at least 6 tricks whether I deserve them or not.

Or maybe we get to 5.
