I expect that the bot calculated that no matter what, the defense was taking two tricks and declarer three.

I voted for 2 but that could easily go -200 or more. At IMPs I pass. If I can double and then bid 2 over 2 without promising extra then I double.

It really depends on your agreements for responding. The modern trend seems to be respond on any excuse when short in partner's minor. My range for 1M 3M is 14-16HCP and a useful singleton or 18-19 balanced. With a good 16 HCP and shortness I splinter.

If your partner is responding on hands like KQxx xxx xx xxxx then 4 is too much.

That depends on your agreements but if you are also opening 1NT with this hand minus the K (14+) it puts a lot of pressure on responder with say KJxx/xxx/xx/Axxx.

I'm not worried about the difference between 1NT and 2 or 2. I'm worried about the difference between 1NT and 4 or 4.

Both Kaplan-Rubens and Kleinman evaluate this as 18. At some point a hand is too strong for 1NT. Responder will pass flat 8s, and many of those will afford good play for game. I would open 1 and hope to raise a 1 or 1 response to 3. I've just been told by a good player that if you are promoting some 14's then 17HCP and five losers is too strong for 1NT.

Not an auction where I want to get busy. It's possible there is an suit in dummy but most days there isn't. And it could be hearts since I have only three. If I had QJxx(x) then a heart lead would be more attractive.

The minimum need to set this is partner with a singleton and the other missing key card. An alternative is that partner has K and K. Declarer then has approximately AxxxxAQxKQxx while responder has xxAQJxxxKxxx.

Looks like that's the best shot to set. It also protects the club winner from going to the mice if partner has KTxx or KJx.

Opener's hand has 5 losers; game needs just two cover cards. 3 is clear. 1 1NT 3 is reasonable.

Responder shouldn't pass because game is still possible in any strain except clubs. Responder has a good 9HCP and opener's upper limit is about 18 HCP. Opener could have 5-5 majors just short of a jump shift, e.g: AKxxx AJxxx Ax x making 4 or 5. Or they could be 5440: AKxxx Axxx AQxx, likely making 7.

So on the first: 1 1NT 2 2 3 4
On the second: 1 1NT 2 2 3 6 is not unreasonable. It should make opposite the strong 5431 or 5440 opener has shown.

Was opener really expecting to find a limit raise with three key cards?

That's 16 good HCP and a one club opening.

This doesn't seem like a forcing pass situation and 6 should show first round control.
