about me

I've won over 50 National Championships and usually play in the Australian Open team (2020, 2019, 2017, 2016, 2014 etc). I'm a Sydney bridge pro who plays, directs and teaches bridge. My best recent results include 4th with Adam Wildavsky in the Platinum Pairs in Kansas City in March 2017, or 2nd by one imp in the 2019 Yeh Cup Pairs in Shanghai.

ULAM's Second Problem Revisited
Here’s Robert May’s articles in Australian Bridge magazine, linked here with permission from the Editor: https://www.australianbridge.com/article_1-2_odds.pdf
Arijit Hazra's bidding problem: T AJ8x Kxxx Kxxx
Would 3H by partner over 2H be Michaels? That important information was omitted. If partner has 5 clubs, 5C might well make with my cards looking great opposite 5125 shape, but if partner has only four clubs, trump control will be a serious problem in 5C. Therefore, “abstain” is probably ...
Online tempo
I think if you click on the bids of the opponent answering the question, a BBO message tells you that they are answering a question from your partner. Perhaps that wasn’t the case last week, but it was for me earlier today.
BBO Problems
If you’re in BBO, go to Messages then News to read about the new version with two servers.
What GIB inventor Matthew Ginsberg has been up to lately
Matt Ginsberg’s website is worth a look. I plan to read his novel Factor Man.

ULAM's Second Problem Revisited
My favourite Roy Kerr article is http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/8372542/Bright-sparks-and-black-holes. I also like https://www.stuff.co.nz/science/111962652/black-hole-image-proves-canterbury-university-professor-roy-kerrs-solution. I played bridge against Roy a couple of times.
BBO Director call (which did not happen)
John - doesn’t your first line of play lead to 11 tricks - 2 spades, 2 hearts, 5 diamonds and 2 clubs?
Bob Heitzman's bidding problem: AQ Q85 8542 K932
Martin - what might partner bid over 3NT with KJxxx, AKxx, AKQx void, possibly with a jack or ten added? I’m not saying that’s what partner has - just that he might consider bidding 4C with a hand like that.
